Game3at
Database Modernization with AWS DMS Serverless
1. Executive Summary
ALGO Cloud Advanced Solutions executed a database modernization and managed services engagement for Game3at, a social media platform serving college students. The primary goal was to migrate from a self-managed MySQL EC2 database to Amazon RDS MySQL using AWS DMS Serverless, while ensuring high availability, minimal downtime, and operational efficiency.
2. Customer Overview
Game3at is a social media platform targeting college students, requiring a scalable and secure database backend to handle global traffic and ensure consistent service availability
3. Business & Technical Challenges
- Self-managed MySQL database hosted on Amazon EC2 required modernization
- High operational overhead and manual maintenance for backups, HA, and scaling.
- Need for minimal downtime during migration.
- Requirement for secure, reliable data replication.
- Ensuring data integrity during migration.
4.AWS Services Implemented
- AWS Database Migration Service (DMS) Serverless: Performed full load and Change Data Capture (CDC) migration from EC2 MySQL to Amazon RDS MySQL with minimal downtime.
- Amazon RDS MySQL: Fully managed database service providing automated backups, high availability, and scalability.
- AWS CloudWatch: Monitored migration performance, replication latency, and overall database health.
- Private VPC: Ensured secure replication and network isolation during migration.
5. Measurable Outcomes
- Significant reduction in migration downtime during database cutover.
- Improved replication efficiency and reduced latency during transition.
- Enhanced database reliability through managed RDS infrastructure.
- Reduction in operational overhead due to automation and managed services.
- Improved monitoring visibility and proactive issue detection.
6. Business Impact
- Reduced operational complexity and manual maintenance.
- Ensured high availability and reliable database performance.
- Secured data migration through private VPC and AWS best practices.
- Improved scalability and operational efficiency through managed services.
- Established measurable KPIs and monitoring for ongoing managed service support.
7. Storage Solution: Secure File Upload Architecture
As part of the broader engagement, ALGO Cloud Advanced Solutions also designed and implemented a secure, scalable file storage solution to eliminate a key architectural bottleneck: user-uploaded content was being routed through the application's EC2 server, adding load and security risk.
AWS Services Implemented
- Amazon S3: Configured with pre-signed URLs, allowing users to upload files directly from the browser without passing through the application server.
- Amazon EC2 (IAM Role): Scoped to least-privilege access (s3:PutObject only), removing the need for long-term credentials in the application.
- Amazon S3 Server-Side Encryption (SSE-S3): Protects all uploaded content at rest.
- Druva (AWS Technology Partner): Deployed to provide managed backup and recovery protection for the S3 bucket holding uploaded content, adding a further layer of data protection alongside S3's native durability.
- AWS Systems Manager Session Manager: Replaced SSH for administrative access, closing an exposed network port.
Measurable Outcomes
1. Exposed network ports reduced from 2 to 1.
2. Long-term credential exposure eliminated (100% to 0%).
3. File-handling load removed entirely from the application server.
4. Architecture scales without additional EC2 capacity, as Amazon S3 absorbs upload traffic directly.
5. Backup and recovery validated through a live test using Druva, confirming uploaded content can be restored independently of the primary S3 bucket.
